Base Layers
A race day rarely starts warm. Base layers are the thin first layer that keeps an athlete comfortable in the start gate and dry after a hard run, without adding the bulk that ruins the fit of a race suit.
Racers want a close, almost tight fit through the torso and arms, in merino or a technical synthetic that moves sweat away from the skin. Merino holds warmth when damp and resists odour over a long race weekend; synthetics dry faster and cost less. Most athletes keep two sets so one can dry while the other is worn.
Pair base layers with a race suit on course and training apparel over the top between runs. For juniors, sizing should allow a full range of motion in a tuck rather than room to grow into.
