Choosing a cut: coarser files remove material faster and are for setting an angle or working past rock damage; finer files maintain an edge that is already correct. Most racers maintain far more often than they reshape, so a finer cut sees the most use.
Files cut forward only. Lift on the return — dragging back dulls the teeth. Clean regularly with a file card, since clogged teeth are the usual reason a good file seems blunt.
Use in a bevel guide and finish with stones to take off the burr.
