Forearm guards are slalom equipment. In SL the forearm is what clears the gate on many turns, and without protection that is a bruise per gate across a training day.
Carbon is the choice when weight matters and you still want a rigid shell. These are reinforced through the center, where the gate actually lands, with flexible outer edges so the guard follows the shape of the arm rather than sitting proud of it.

Fit is what makes a guard work. One that rotates around the arm ends up protecting the wrong side, and one sitting too high leaves the strike zone exposed. It should sit firmly enough not to move through a run, without cutting circulation.
Carbon or plastic? Carbon is lighter and stiffer, which means less swing weight and better impact spreading: worth it for an athlete training slalom daily. A moulded plastic guard is more forgiving of a poor fit and costs less, which suits a racer still growing.
