Shin guards are sized by length, and length is what decides whether they work. The guard should cover from just below the knee to the top of the boot cuff with no gap — a gap is exactly where a gate finds the leg. Measure that distance on your athlete before choosing a size rather than going by age.

The gate-glide surface is worth understanding. A guard that catches on a gate rather than sliding off it transfers the hit into the leg and slows you down. Smoother contact means less impact and a cleaner line.
Carbon or plastic? Carbon is lighter and stiffer, which spreads impact better and means less weight to swing through a slalom course. Moulded plastic is more forgiving of an imperfect fit and cheaper, which suits a racer still growing quickly.
Guards rotating around the leg mid-run is the most common complaint — grip pads and a correct length fix it; straps alone do not.
