Ceramic finishers do the last step on an edge — refining a surface that a file has already cut to the right angle. Done well it produces an edge that holds on injected race snow, where a file finish alone chatters.
They wear and they load. Like any abrasive, a ceramic insert fills with the metal it removes, and once loaded it burnishes rather than cuts. If your finisher has stopped producing the result it used to, clean the inserts first — and use them wet, which floats the swarf clear and extends their life considerably.
