A ballistic-fabric protective top worn under a race suit, with high-absorption padding over the areas that take gate contact and impact in a fall.
It is cut ergonomically and closes with a front zip, which makes it far easier to get on and off in a start area than a pull-on top — a real consideration when you are layering under a suit in the cold with a bib already on.
Most racers use a top like this for GS and speed events, where a padded suit is not worn and protection goes underneath instead. It pairs with separate shin and arm guards rather than replacing them, and it is not a substitute for a certified back protector if your event or program calls for one.
