Racing hands take a beating that ordinary ski gloves are not built for. A slalom racer clears gates with the backs of the hands all day; a speed racer needs warmth in a tuck at sixty miles an hour without losing pole feel.

That splits the category. Race gloves and mittens add armoured backs and knuckles for gate contact, and are what you want for slalom. Traditional ski gloves prioritise warmth and dexterity for training, free skiing and coaching. Mittens beat gloves for cold hands; gloves beat mittens for feel.
