Measure around the knuckles with the hand relaxed, and size to the measurement rather than to what you usually wear. A race mitt bought large is colder and puts the knuckle protector off the strike point.
GS or slalom? This is a GS mitt — knuckle protection for gate contact at speed. Slalom racers taking direct hits on the backs of the hands all day should look at a dedicated SL glove or mitten with full 3D back padding.
