Choosing a diameter: 16 mm is a junior shaft, 18 mm is the standard adult slalom size, and 19 mm is for stronger racers who bend poles. Most athletes should be on 18 — going wider adds stiffness they do not need and weight they will feel through a course.
Tungsten carbide tips are worth noting. They bite into hard, icy race surfaces where a steel tip skates, and they hold their point for seasons rather than rounding off. On an injected slalom course that grip is the difference between a pole plant and a slip.
These need guards. Slalom means hitting every gate, so budget for pole guards unless the pole ships with a punch cover.
