The protection is layered. A multi-impact EPP liner stands up to the repeated knocks of a slalom training day, where single-impact foam degrades. VPD inserts take the smaller repeat hits. MIPS Integra handles rotational forces, the kind a straight foam liner manages least well.

The breakaway chin guard matters. A guard that releases under a hard enough hit protects the jaw without transferring the whole load into the helmet shell — and it is the part slalom racers replace most often, so a bar that detaches cleanly is worth having.
Which events does it cover? Slalom. From U14 up, GS, Super-G, downhill and Kombi require a helmet meeting the FIS standard, so a racer doing both will need a speed helmet as well. Confirm the current requirement with your coach before a first start — the rules are reviewed each season.
