Race Gloves & Mittens
A race glove is built for one thing an ordinary ski glove is not: being hit. Slalom racers clear gates with the backs of their hands, which is why race gloves carry hard armour across the knuckles and back while keeping the palm thin enough to feel the pole.
The choice between glove and mitten is warmth against feel. Mittens are warmer and are common in speed events and cold starts; gloves give more dexterity and are usual in slalom. Many racers own both and choose on the morning.
Fit snugly. A race glove bought with growing room is colder, because there is less hand filling it, and the armour no longer sits over the knuckles where the gate hits.
