The single most important thing about a waxing iron is that it holds temperature. A household iron cycles its element through a wide swing, and the peaks are what scorch bases — an iron that reads 140°F on the dial may be touching 180°F.
This one adjusts from 100°F to 260°F, which covers everything from soft base prep waxes up to the hardest cold-snow waxes, and the thicker base plate is what smooths out the cycling.

A thick plate is the feature to look for. Mass stores heat, so the plate stays closer to the set temperature as wax draws heat out of it. Thin plates drop temperature the moment they meet cold wax, then the element overshoots correcting.
Set the temperature to the wax, not by feel — the wrapper states a range. Too cool and the wax will not soak in; too hot and you damage the base and burn off the wax you just paid for. If it smokes, it is too hot.
Keep the iron moving and never let it rest on the base.

Maybe I Got Lucky?
Unlike another review on here, I am pretty satisfied with my purchase (maybe they got a faulty one?). As a matter of fact, I've had this iron for about 7 years, going on 8. I've used it multiple times a season, with about a 6-7mo storage time in between. It's never failed to heat up or maintain temperature. For the price, you absolutely can't beat it. If they're still making them like they used to 7 years ago, I wouldn't hesitate recommending this to anyone. I should mention I don't do any serious racing. I'm just a recreational freecarver on an alpine board, but it suits my needs just great!

Piece of JUNK!
This iron is a piece of JUNK! It would not heat up and would not melt the wax. Waste of money! Went in the garbage.
