Cross-contamination is the problem it solves. Wax left in a shared tray carries into the next application, so a warm soft wax contaminates a cold-snow job and the result is slower than either wax on its own. Once you are running more than one wax, separate trays stop that entirely.
The lid matters as much as the tray. Wax left open collects dust and grit, and anything in the tray goes onto a base. A sealed tray between uses means the wax is clean when you come back to it.
Most shops end up with a tray for cold, one for warm, and one for whatever they are racing on — labelled, because unlabelled trays defeat the purpose.
