Why the side zips matter more for juniors: a young racer getting changed in a car park with a bib on, boots buckled and cold hands will not fight a pant that has to go over boots. One that zips open along its whole length goes on in ten seconds, so it actually gets used.
The 20,000 rating is millimetres of water resistance — roughly, how much water pressure the fabric takes before leaking. Juniors sit in the snow far more than adults do, so the number earns its keep.
Sizing: the adjustable waist and removable suspenders give real room to grow, so this is one of the few items where buying slightly long is reasonable. Unlike a race suit or glove, a pant that is a little big costs nothing in performance.
