The 220° release angle is the safety story. Earlier strap systems released cleanly in one direction; a pole caught in a gate at an awkward angle still wrenched the wrist or thumb. A wider release arc means the pole lets go across far more of the ways a fall can actually happen.

Airfoil profiling is a speed detail: a shaped shaft cuts through the air with less drag than a round one. The gain is small, which is exactly why World Cup racers care about it.
