Brass is the everyday base-prep brush — aggressive enough to clean and open structure, but softer than steel, so it will not cut into the base if you lean on it.
What it actually does is lift dirt and oxidised material out of the grooves so the base can absorb wax. A base that will not take wax is usually not worn out; it is closed up and dirty.

Where it sits in the sequence: before waxing, not after. Brass opens and cleans; horsehair clears wax after ironing; nylon polishes last.
Brass or steel? Brass is the routine choice. Carbon steel is more aggressive and belongs in a base restoration — stripping oxidation off a neglected ski — not in a weekly tune. Using steel routinely takes material off a base that did not need to lose it.

Great Quality
Initially I was worried it would be too stiff, but the longer bristles are the perfect stiffness to get residual wax off the base before finishing it off with a nylon brush. Besides that, there's not much to say about a brass brush. haha. Now I just wish I bought the larger one for my alpine board. This one would be great for skis and such.
