Use it after the file, not instead of it. A file cuts the angle and leaves a burr; the stone removes that burr and refines the surface. Skipping the stone leaves an edge that feels sharp to a thumbnail and behaves unpredictably on snow — grabby in places, dull in others.
Use it wet. A dry stone fills with the metal it removes, stops cutting and starts burnishing the edge instead. Water or Secret Sauce floats the swarf clear, which cuts better and makes the stone last much longer.
If a stone seems to have stopped working, it is far more likely clogged than worn out. Clean it and lubricate it before replacing it.
