Lint-free paper with two distinct jobs on a wax bench, which is why a roll lasts less time than you expect.

As a polishing cloth, it wipes down a freshly brushed base and lifts the last of the wax dust without leaving fibres behind — ordinary paper towel sheds lint into the structure, which is exactly what you have just spent twenty minutes clearing.

Under the iron, it acts as a barrier when applying hard or cold waxes: the wax melts through the paper and spreads more evenly, and the base sees gentler, more distributed heat. That is a genuinely useful trick with the very hard cold-snow waxes that otherwise need an iron temperature close to where base damage starts.
