Which length: a longer file spans more edge per stroke, which is faster and holds the angle more consistently, so a 12 inch is the bench choice. The 10 inch is a good compromise. This 6 inch is for a travel kit and for work in a guide where a long file is unwieldy — most tuners own a long one and a short one.

Files cut forward only. Lift on the return stroke; dragging back dulls the teeth. Clean with a file card, because clogged teeth are the usual reason a file seems blunt.

Use in a bevel guide, then finish with stones.
