A round true bar in case-hardened tool steel — for checking base flatness and reading edge bevels.
Hold it across the base against a light and the gaps tell you what the base is doing. Light under the middle means concave, or edge-high: the ski will feel hooky and hard to release. Light at the edges means base-high: it will feel vague and slow to grip.

Round or flat? A round bar is compact enough to live in a tool roll and is harder to damage — a flat bar that gets knocked or stored badly stops being flat, at which point it is worse than nothing because you trust it. The World Cup True Bar is the more precise instrument for bench work.
Check flatness before tuning, not after. There is no point setting a precise bevel on a base that is not flat — the angle you set is not the angle the snow sees.
