SVST Standard Files

The non-chromed files — the same Austrian manufacture as the Superchrome range, without the chrome plating, at a lower price.

Chrome adds durability and a slightly smoother cut. A standard file cuts just as accurately when new; it simply does not hold its edge as long. For a home tuner working on one or two pairs, that is a reasonable trade.

Which length: a longer file spans more edge per stroke, so it is faster and holds the angle more consistently — 10" or 12" for a bench. Shorter files are easier to control and fit a travel kit.

Chromed or standard? If you tune a team's skis, the Superchrome files last considerably longer and work out cheaper per ski. For occasional use, standard files are the sensible buy.

Files cut forward only. Lift on the return; dragging back dulls them. Clean with a file card regularly — clogged teeth are the usual reason a file seems blunt.
