Red spans the freezing point, which is the most consequential line in waxing — snow below it is dry and abrasive, above it holds free water. On a day that warms through 32°F, wax for the conditions at race time.
For the wax you use most, the 10oz bar is far better value; keep 2.5oz bars for temperatures you meet occasionally.

How to apply it: crayon the bar on, iron it in with the iron moving constantly, then let the ski cool fully before scraping — twenty minutes minimum. Scraping warm pulls the wax straight back out. Finish by brushing the structure clear, which is the step that actually makes the base fast.
