The drive shaft is the part of a roto handle that takes the load, and it is a consumable rather than a permanent component.

What failure looks like: a wobble. Brushing puts side load on the shaft, and a shaft that has developed play makes the brush run untrue, which means uneven contact across the base and vibration through the drill. It gets worse gradually, so people often assume the brush is worn rather than the shaft.
Worth keeping a spare if you tune at races. A handle with a failed shaft is unusable, and it is not the kind of part anyone has in a lodge.
Check the chuck too. A drill chuck that has not gripped the shaft squarely will damage a new shaft as quickly as it did the old one: if a shaft failed early, look at how it was clamped.
