The drive shaft is the part of a roto handle that takes the load, and it is a consumable rather than a permanent component.

What failure looks like: a wobble. Brushing puts side load on the shaft, and a shaft that has developed play makes the brush run untrue — which means uneven contact across the base and vibration through the drill. It gets worse gradually, so people often assume the brush is worn rather than the shaft.
Worth keeping a spare if you tune at races. A handle with a failed shaft is unusable, and it is not the kind of part anyone has in a lodge.
Check the chuck too. A drill chuck that has not gripped the shaft squarely will damage a new shaft as quickly as it did the old one — if a shaft failed early, look at how it was clamped.
