Why not just use an old clothes iron: a household iron cycles its element through a wide temperature swing, and the peaks scorch bases. It also has steam holes, which leave uneven wax coverage. A waxing iron holds a set temperature with a flat, thick plate.

What you give up against the digital T73: a dial instead of a display, and less precise control. If you use one or two waxes and mostly train, that is fine. If you run a full temperature ladder and need to hit a specific figure for each, the digital is worth the difference.

Set the temperature to the wax — the wrapper states a range. If it smokes, it is too hot. Keep it moving, and never rest it on the base.
