A digital iron holds temperature far more tightly than a dial, and temperature stability is the single thing that separates a waxing iron from a household one.

Plate thickness is the specification to compare. Mass stores heat, so a thick plate stays close to the set temperature as cold wax draws heat out of it. A thin plate drops the moment it meets the bar, the element overshoots correcting, and those swings are what scorch bases. 18 mm is genuinely thick for an iron at this price.
Set the iron to the wax, not by feel. Every wax states a range on the wrapper; too cool and it will not soak in, too hot and you damage the base and burn off what you just paid for. If it smokes, it is too hot.
Keep it moving and never rest it on the base. An iron holder is worth having for exactly that reason.
