A hard-chromed 12 inch file, Austrian-made, Rockwell tested at 67 — harder than the edges it cuts, which is the whole requirement.

Modern ski edges keep getting harder, and a file that is not harder still will skate rather than cut, glazing the edge instead of sharpening it. Chroming adds durability and a smoother cutting action.

10 inch or 12 inch? This 12 inch file spans more of the edge per stroke, which makes it faster and helps hold the angle consistent — the better choice for a bench. The 10 inch version is easier to control and fits a travel kit. Plenty of tuners own both: the long one at home, the short one on the road.

Files cut in one direction. Work tip to tail, lift on the return, and clean the teeth regularly with a file card — clogged teeth are the most common reason a good file seems dull.

Use it in a bevel guide rather than freehand, and finish with stones to remove the burr filing leaves.
