The filings are the real argument. Wax shavings sweep up; fine steel swarf works into carpet, into boot soles and into everything else in the room, and it rusts. In a shared wax room it ends up on somebody's bases.
It also speeds up scraping. Working over a bag means long continuous passes rather than stopping to clear the bench, and long passes produce a better result than short interrupted ones.
Worth it for any bench that gets regular use, and close to essential in a team room where several people are working and nobody owns the mess.
