The oval block and the strap are what you are paying for over a rectangle: more bristle in contact per pass, and a hand position that lets you put pressure through the brush rather than gripping it. Over a full pair of skis that is noticeably less work.

Where it sits: last. Bronze or steel opens the structure, horsehair clears, nylon polishes. Brushing until the base stops giving up wax dust is the part most people cut short.
Oval or rectangle? Oval covers faster and is more comfortable for volume work; a rectangular brush costs less and is perfectly adequate for one or two pairs.
For finishing liquid waxes specifically, the fine red nylon oval is the better match.
