Apparel, Gloves, Suits

Everything a racer wears, from the start gate to the lodge. The useful way to think about it is in layers, because a race day runs cold at the top and warm after a hard run.

Against the skin, a thin base layer that moves sweat. On course, a race suit, with gloves or mittens matched to the discipline. Between runs, training apparel over the top — the layer that actually keeps an athlete warm while they wait.

Away from the course, clothing covers sweatshirts, shirts and hats for the drive and the lodge.

For juniors, buy for this season rather than next. Gear bought two sizes large is colder, slower and harder to move in, and a race suit in particular has to fit now.
