Horsehair is the workhorse of a roto setup — the brush that does most of the actual wax clearing, after brass has opened the structure and before nylon polishes.
The anti-static property is the reason horsehair persists in a world of synthetics. Static holds fine wax particles against the base; horsehair does not generate it, so the base comes out genuinely clear rather than dusted.

Where it sits in the sequence: brass first to open and clean, horsehair second to clear, nylon last to polish. If you only buy one roto brush, buy horsehair — it does the largest share of the work.
