Medium-stiff nylon — the all-purpose brush that handles initial wax removal and will carry on into polishing if you work at it.

If you are buying a first brush, this is the sensible one. It is stiff enough to clear wax from the structure after scraping, and forgiving enough to use on every wax type without thinking about it.

How the nylon brushes differ: this medium-stiff one does the clearing work; the soft nylon finishes and polishes. A full bench has both, plus a brass for pre-wax cleaning.

The most common mistake is pressure. Brushing is done by the bristle tips across many light passes, not by leaning on the block. Heavy pressure splays bristles, wears the brush out and clears less wax, not more.

Work tip to tail in one direction, and brush until the base stops producing wax dust.
