Choosing a disc is about what job you are doing, not about buying the finest available:
- Coarse: establishing an angle from scratch, or heavy work on a damaged edge
- Medium: general maintenance through a season
- Fine: sharpening and polishing; ships installed on the tuner
- Extra fine: final polish, also available
Use coarse sparingly. It removes real material, and edge steel is finite: a ski only has so many tunes in it. Set the angle with coarse once, then maintain with medium and finish with fine. Reaching for coarse every time is how an edge gets used up in two seasons.
Work-hardened edges are the exception. An edge that has been through rocks develops a hardened surface that a fine disc will skate over; start coarser to get under it.
