Hand Brushes

A hand brush is the most-used tool on a wax bench and the one worth buying properly. The bristles do the work, so a brush with thin, sparse bristles simply moves wax around instead of lifting it out.

Work coarse to fine. Brass and steel open the structure and take off the bulk. Horsehair is the everyday workhorse and does most of the clearing. Nylon polishes at the end. Combination brushes pair two materials on one block, which is a reasonable compromise when you are travelling.

Technique matters as much as the brush: work tip to tail, in one direction, with light pressure and many passes rather than leaning on it. Heavy pressure wears bristles and the base without clearing more wax.
