Steel is the brush that opens a base. It strips oxidation, clears closed structure and leaves the surface ready to absorb wax — and it is the first tool to reach for on a ski that will not take wax however often you try.

The Swix brushing sequence runs coarse to fine, and each step removes less than the last:
- Steel — opens structure, strips oxidation (this brush)
- Bronze — cleans and opens after scraping
- Horsehair — clears wax, anti-static
- Nylon — final polish
Use steel deliberately, not weekly. It removes material. This is a base-preparation and restoration tool; for routine tuning, start with bronze. And always follow steel with softer brushes — a base left after steel looks structured and skis slow.
