Tuning Equipment
Tuning splits into two jobs that need different tools: edges and bases. Most people start with wax because it is easy, but edges are what a racer feels first.
For edges you need a bevel guide that holds a repeatable angle, files that cut cleanly, and stones to finish and de-burr. The guide matters more than the file. A hand-held file rounds the edge a little more every pass, while a guide gives you the same angle every time.
For bases you need waxing gear, plus repair materials for the gouges that come with rocks and race courses.
Browse tuning tools, waxing equipment, benches, mounting equipment and shop supplies. For a complete setup, a tune kit is the cheaper way in.
We sell the equipment rather than the tuning service, so if you are unsure what a tool is for, ask. A good share of what is here is designed by Sun Valley Ski Tools in the same building, so the answer comes from people who know how it was meant to be used.
If you are starting from nothing, the order that matters is: a vise to hold the ski, a base edge guide and a side edge guide, a file, a diamond stone to finish, a scraper and a brush. That is a working kit. Everything after it (a second bevel angle, a dedicated sidewall cutter, roto brushes, a wax iron with real temperature control) makes the same jobs faster and more repeatable rather than possible.
The brands here are the ones race rooms actually use. SVST (Sun Valley Ski Tools), which operates out of the same building as this shop, for edge guides, bevelers, true bars and base repair; Swix for files, diamond stones, irons and brushes; Ski Man for vises, benches and sidewall planes; and Vallorbe and Diaface for cutting files and diamond stones.
For damage rather than maintenance, see ski repair and maintenance.
