Wax Brushes

Brushing is the step people skip, and it is the one that makes a base fast. Wax left sitting in the structure holds the ski back; brushing pulls it out of the grooves and leaves the pattern open to shed water.

The order goes coarse to fine. Brass or steel opens the structure and strips excess wax. Horsehair does the main clearing work. Nylon polishes. Each one leaves less behind than the last, and skipping straight to nylon just polishes over wax that should have come out.

Keep separate brushes for different wax types if you can — brushes hold residue, and a brush used on soft warm wax will contaminate a cold-snow job.

Shop hand brushes for a home bench, roto brushes if you are doing volume, and corks and polishers for the final pass.
