RACE-WERKS™ Race Ski Wax Rules & How-To Guide

A temperature-based, race-day ski waxing system

You can find Sun Valley Ski Tools Brushes, scrapers, SVST Ultra wax and Race-Service wax at

1️⃣ Race-Werks Core Waxing Rules (Non-Negotiable)

✔ Clean → Prep → Wax → Scrape → Brush → Finish

Speed comes from clean structure + correct hardness, not thick wax.

✔ Always match snow temperature

  • Measure snow surface, not air

  • Old/icy snow skis colder

  • Fresh or wet snow skis warmer

✔ Hard wax FIRST, speed wax SECOND

  • Race-Werks Base Prep Wax = protection

  • Race-Werks Speed Wax = glide

✔ Thin layers only

Excess wax = drag.

✔ Race legality

Always confirm race rules for additives or topcoats.

2️⃣ Race-Werks Wax Selection by Snow Temperature

❄ Cold / Dry Snow

-15°C to -8°C | 5°F to 18°F

Snow feel: Dry, squeaky, abrasive
Race-Werks Wax: Race-Werks Cold Blue

Purpose:

  • Maximum base protection

  • Reduced friction & static buildup

Iron temp: 130–140°C
Structure: Fine linear

? Never use soft wax in true cold — it will slow the ski.

Mid-Cold / Packed Snow

-8°C to -2°C | 18°F to 28°F

Snow feel: Chalky, compact, aggressive
Race-Werks Wax: Race-Werks Race Red

Purpose:

  • Balanced glide + durability

  • Most common race condition

Iron temp: 140–150°C
Structure: Fine → medium linear

? This is the “money range” for most race days.

Warm / Wet Snow

-2°C to +5°C | 28°F to 40°F

Snow feel: Wet, sticky, suction-heavy
Race-Werks Wax: Race-Werks Warm Yellow

Purpose:

  • Reduce suction

  • Improve water evacuation

Iron temp: 150–160°C
Structure: Coarse linear or broken

? In warm snow, structure matters more than wax hardness.

3️⃣ Race-Werks Step-by-Step Wax Application

Step 1: Base Cleaning

  • Brush with Race-Werks Brass Brush

  • Tip → tail only

  • Hot scrape if base is dirty or gray

Step 2: Base Prep Layer (Durability)

  • Apply Race-Werks Cold Blue (even if racing warm)

  • Drip thin line

  • Iron smoothly, constant motion

  • Cool 30+ minutes

  • Scrape fully

  • Brush:

    • Brass → Nylon

? This layer lasts multiple days and protects the base.

Step 3: Race-Day Speed Layer

  • Apply correct Race-Werks Speed Wax

  • Iron tip → tail

  • Cool 20–30 minutes

  • Scrape thin and clean

  • Brush sequence:

    1. Nylon

    2. Horsehair

    3. Soft nylon polish

Step 4: Optional Race Finish

  • Race-Werks rub-on or liquid top layer

  • Light corking

  • Soft nylon polish

⚠ Use only if race-legal.

4️⃣ Race-Werks Brushing Order (Critical)

Brush Function
Brass Opens structure
Nylon Removes wax
Horsehair Smooths base
Soft Nylon Final polish

? Always brush tip → tail

5️⃣ Common Race-Werks Tuning Mistakes

❌ Over-waxing
❌ Burning the base with hot iron
❌ Wrong structure for wet snow
❌ Not brushing enough
❌ Panic waxing race morning
